Community networks, also known as citizen or neighbourhood networks, are virtual communities based on real
geographical locations. Their primary goal is to set up an omnipresent means for communication, that can also be
used by people who are not so well acquainted with technical matters. This infrastructure can be used by public
institutions as well as by associations or private persons in order to spread information that is specifically important
for the community, to enable people to profit from services that are being offered or for exchanging news and opinions.
The project will investigate different aspects like the technical realisation of community networks, the differences
between the various types of networks, the organisation of the participants in the network, the development of
community networks over the time.A campaign is being prepared, to sensiblise the public for this kind of project
and a prototyp is being realised.
