Dialog With The Knowbotic South

"The four continents" (1764-1766), Jan von Kessel, Antwerpen
The multimedia research group "knowbotic research" is a good example of how interdisciplinary work between art and technology can lead to new results. In the project presented in Telepolis, the antarctic is turned into artificial nature. The antarctic research is concerned with a geographical area which, because of its extreme climatic conditions, can only be opened up by means of technology. The results are spread all over the world to the computers of research institutions. With the help of intelligent agents (self-reliantly learning computer programs) and with the consent of the responsible institutions, knowbotic research will make data on the antarctic accessible for the visitor of the exhibition. The information will not be presented on the 2D-surface of the screen but in a complex interior installation where sounds, smells, optical media and a new interface technique (Private Eye) for navigating in the dataspace are forming a revolutionary and already prizewinning (Prix Ars Electronica, ZKM Medienkunstpreis) entity.
