Market Economy for Beginners

The installation represents a creditcardreader, it ressembles a Dan Flavin jukebox and uses two fluorescent colours: ultraviolet, the fluorescent colour that we know from the nightclubs and from the lamps used, to check wether money is conterfeit or not. Fluorescent red, the colour that has become the international sign of prostitution and that gave the name to the red light districts.

The subject matter of the installation is the abstraction of modern payment forms, offering a visual representation of the information on your creditcard. The interface of contemporary shopping is the slot you swipe your creditcards through. The installation will transfer the code contained in the magnetic stripe on the plastic card into a row of fluorescent colours, revealing the beauty of the binary code. Interaction (consumption) is encouraged by the instant reaction to your actions (the abstract payment), your shopping power is tested in a straightforward way. Coming to the exhibition with your bank- or creditcards, you will be checked in and you will receive a indiviually selected presentation of the exhibition.
